A common misunderstanding regarding the negative items that appear on your reports is the idea
that deletion of the item will resolve the problem. It is important to understand that the
bureaus are only the repository for the reporting information. If a negative item is removed
due to inaccuracies in the reporting the actual debt still remains and the original creditor
still has the ability to pursue legal action in the collection of that debt with regard to
the states limitations on that legal action. If you fail to address the debt, the removal
of a negative item is only a short term solution rather than a long term fix.
At Improve My Credit USA, we will only dispute items on your credit report that you believe to
be less than 100% accurate and 100% verifiable. If you feel the items is 100% accurate and
100% verifiable we will advise you to leave the item alone.
You should also be aware that paying a collection account that is over two years old can
possibly lower your credit scores. Since eighty percent of your scores are derived from the
last twenty four months of activity, a payment on an old collection account that is then
updated as recent activity can potentially lower your scores.
For this reason, it is best advised to arrange with the agency in advance of payment to have
the item deleted from your credit once payment has been made. This is commonly referred to
as "pay for deletion." While many collection agencies may indicate that this is not a
possibility, a firm stance can get you he desired outcome. ALWAYS consult with a credit
specialist BEFORE paying off old collection accounts.
